The Russian poet Osip Mandelstam was once given an assignment to review a Tsarist palace that had been turned into a museum for the People. When he turned in his copy the editors were aghast that Mandelstam had not described the candelabra, the gilded panels, the frescoes. Instead he had turned in a description of the straw sandals visitors were required to wear in order not to scuff the floors. That is the kind of criticism I want to write; hope to write.
